Why order durable medical equipment online?
First of all, what the heck is durable medical equipment and why am I seeing a blog about it on a bra stores page?
Well, if you are one of our mastectomy clients you know that we are able to bill your insurance for bras and breast forms that you have been prescribed/given an order for. This branch of the medical field is called durable medical equipment. Strangely enough bras and forms fall in the same category as walker, canes, c-pap machines and the like. We are regulated by the NC Board of Pharmacy, American Board of Certification for Orthotics and Prosthetics, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Board of Certification (for mastectomy fitters). Phew! Therefore we must keep up to date with all the regulations and laws that allow us to be the best at what we do.
Historically, DME (including bras and forms) have been purchased by making an appointment with the certified fitter at one of their physical locations, bringing in a script from your physician and being measured, asked questions about your surgery, lifestyle, treatment, and bra likes/dislikes. Your fitter most likely returns with suggested bras and forms that will most closely match your remaining breast (or fit the size cup you have chosen to be for bilateral surgeries) and you spend the next 30 minutes or so trying on products gaining the approval of the discerning eye of your fitter. We like it when you want us to check the fit of anything!! It’s what we’re here for. You would then complete your paperwork (unfortunately this takes the longest), sign a few documents, pay your bill, receive care/warranty instructions and be on your way with your products. Not a terrible way to do things at all and don’t get me wrong…if this is your first fitting, we always recommend coming in or scheduling a video conference so we can help you choose the right products to get you started. But…
After the initial visit, why not throw caution to the wind and shop online from our website?
